Dr. Chengelis has extensive experience in bariatric surgery.

Dr. Chengelis performs Laparoscopic Roux en Y Gastric Bypass. This operation makes a pouch from the upper 15-20 ml of the stomach by stapling and separating this small portion of upper stomach from the remainder of the stomach. This small pouch restricts the amount of food consumed and results in decrease in caloric intake and thus weight loss. The small intestine is rearranged and attached to this pouch to allow food to pass. This portion of the small intestine is called the Roux limb. Food does not absorb very well in this portion of the intestine because the juices and enzymes required to do so have been bypassed. This results in an additional reduction of calories and contributes to weight loss.

Dr. Chengelis believes strongly and is very enthusiastic about this procedure. Why? Because the vast majority of patients do well and achieve success. It is rewarding to be a part of something positive and successful. Patients usually are very happy they had the surgery.

Nevertheless, the decision to have this procedure requires a great deal of thought and research. Patients will need consultation with a nutritionist, pass a psychological evaluation, and frequently must deal with other medical issues before surgery. The William Beaumont Hospital Weight Control Center offers these and many other services to help the patient both before and after surgery. Your consultation with the surgeon will help you in this process as well. This visit is important as during this time you will review the potential risks of the procedure as well. Dr. Chengelis wants you to be well informed and aware of all the possibilities.

In addition, his office staff is experienced in working with patients and their insurance companies to obtain approval. Their goal is to see you succeed.
