ANATOMY. The femoral canal is an opening
which allows the femoral vessels, the main blood vessel of the legs, to pass between the abdomen and the legs. If this
passage is too large, a bulge or protrusion below the groin crease can take place. Like many hernias, this
bulge could contain intestine and if trapped can become stragulated. Women have this type of hernia more frequently
than men.
OPERATION. The incision to repair this hernia is similar to the
inguinal hernia. A small cut near the crease of the groin allows repair. The procedure is almost always same
day surgery (out patient) and often does not require significant pain medication.
